The battle for the military town of Hostomel began on February 24, 2022, the very first day of the full-scale invasion. Given its strategic significance, Hostomel quickly became a primary target for Russian forces. Despite the heroic resistance of Ukrainian defenders, the town eventually fell under occupation.
The most severe destruction was seen on streets leading to Antonov Airport and in the glass factory district. However, even residential neighborhoods far from the airfield were devastated. After Hostomel’s liberation, residents returned to find their homes looted and ransacked—occupiers had rifled through personal belongings, stolen valuables, and deliberately vandalized what they couldn’t take. The streets were littered with wrecked vehicles, and schools had been turned into military barracks, where Russian forces held civilians, including children, hostage.
The occupation lasted 35 days, ending with Hostomel’s liberation on April 2, 2022. At that time, more than 400 people were reported missing, and numerous tortured bodies were discovered across the town. Among the victims was Hostomel’s mayor, Yurii Prylypko, whose car was targeted by Russian troops.
