It was on Vokzalna Street in Bucha that Ukrainian forces successfully halted and, after several hours of intense combat, destroyed a 30-kilometer-long enemy convoy, consisting of approximately 100 units of heavy military equipment. This event took place on February 27, 2022.
The Russian forces likely intended to advance through Bucha, proceed to Irpin, and ultimately reach Kyiv. However, this convoy became one of the first major enemy formations to be neutralized by the Armed Forces of Ukraine and local territorial defense units.
Following the liberation of Bucha on March 31, 2022, photographs documented the aftermath, depicting a graveyard of Russian military equipment against the backdrop of destroyed buildings. These photos came to symbolize the failure of Russia’s strategic objective to capture Kyiv within three days.
By the first anniversary of Bucha’s liberation, Vokzalna Street had been fully restored. The municipal authorities, in collaboration with partners, carried out repairs on over 100 residential buildings, while approximately 12 required complete reconstruction. In total, around 2,500 residential structures in Bucha sustained damage due to shelling and occupation.
