You find yourself in the village of Moshchun in February 2022, as Russian forces begin their offensive toward Kyiv. Your mission is to take part in the events, assist the defenders, make critical decisions, and learn more about the heroic moments of this battle.
February 27. The enemy has breached Moshchun. A column of 14 enemy vehicles has entered the village.
You are a soldier of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade named after the Black Zaporozhians. You must find the best position to ambush the enemy column.
Where will you set up your ambush?
Ambush near the forest – the enemy is least familiar with this area.
Setting up an ambush near the forest gives Ukrainian forces a tactical advantage. The wooded area provides natural cover, allowing units to remain undetected and strike with the element of surprise. The dense trees and narrow paths hinder enemy maneuverability, increasing the effectiveness of the counterattack while minimizing risks for Ukrainian troops.
March 5 – Russian forces launch a massive shelling of the village. Civilians are in grave danger.
You are a local volunteer. Your task is to organize the evacuation of the residents.
What will you do?
Using the vehicles of local entrepreneurs and the village elder was crucial for saving lives.
The use of local entrepreneurs’ and the village elder’s vehicles allowed for a swift, organized evacuation with minimal casualties among civilians. The drivers' knowledge of the area helped navigate safe routes while avoiding enemy patrols, ensuring a secure passage to Kyiv.
March 8 – The enemy attempts to cross the Irpin River.
You are an artillery officer. Your task is to destroy the pontoon bridge.
What strategy will you choose?
Destroy the pontoon immediately to prevent the enemy from crossing.
Striking the pontoon bridge early prevents a large enemy force from reaching the left bank of the river. A rapid artillery strike disrupts the enemy’s crossing efforts, preventing them from establishing a foothold and advancing deeper into Ukrainian defensive positions.
March 12 – The defense of Moshchun continues. The enemy attempts to break through from the Chornobyl direction.
You are a Ukrainian Armed Forces unit commander. You must decide on the next course of action.
What will you choose?
Counterattacking and rotating forces allowed the positions to be restored.
The tactic of rotating troops—where soldiers remained on the front lines for no more than three days—helped reduce fatigue and minimize losses. Timely reinforcement by an additional battalion under Colonel Vdovychenko enabled Ukrainian forces to repel the enemy effectively.
March 21 – Ukrainian forces liberate Moshchun from the occupiers.
What actions should be taken after the village is freed?
What will you choose?
Securing positions and clearing the area of mines was critically important for civilian safety.
Moshchun was one of the most devastated areas, and only after demining and assessing the situation could further offensive actions be considered.
March–April 2022 – After the battle for Moshchun, Russian forces continue their attempts to break through to Kyiv.
How will you distribute forces for further defense?
Reinforcing defenses in multiple key locations allowed Ukrainian forces to effectively contain the enemy, minimize losses, and prevent another large-scale assault.
Meanwhile, restoration efforts were carried out gradually, ensuring humanitarian aid reached civilians.
