Uncharted Chornobyl

To mark the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl accident, the information campaign “35 Facts about the Chornobyl NPP” has started in Kyiv Oblast, intended to draw attention to a rethinking of the events and consequences of the disaster.
The Kyiv Regional State Administration decided to recall well-known facts and tell new ones about the Chornobyl NPP and the Exclusion Zone.
To visualise the topic, the campaign began with the placement of social billboards in large and small towns of Kyiv Oblast and along the highways leading to the Exclusion Zone.
The posters’ stories illustrate the positive changes that have taken place in the Exclusion Zone: thirty-five years after the disaster, a unique population of animals and birds has revived there, including species not found in the rest of Ukraine.
“For 35 years Chornobyl evoked only negative associations and fear, creating a negative image of Ukraine. The time has come to change this perception: work is actively under way to develop the surrounding areas and to promote Chornobyl as a tourist magnet not only for Kyiv Oblast but for all of Ukraine. We must learn to perceive differently and to rediscover this place for tourists and researchers,” said Tetiana Shcherbak, Deputy Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration.
*The project is being carried out in accordance with the order of the Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration of 07.04.2021 No. 200, as part of the implementation of the Plan of measures related to the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, approved by order of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 24.02.2021 No. 170-r.
