A Unique Pearl of the Late Palaeolithic: the Dobranichivka Site Archaeological Museum, Yahotyn Historical Museum
КЗ КОР “Яготинський історичний музей”

The Kyiv region is an amazing region of Ukraine: at every step you can see interesting places, learn much that is new, immerse yourself in the artistic beauty of outstanding talented masters of the brush, and admire ancient buildings, wonderful landscapes and more. On 18 April the world marks the International Day for Monuments and Sites, and in Ukraine the Day of Historical and Cultural Monuments.

Travelling through the left-bank Kyiv region along the Kyiv–Kharkiv highway, almost 30 km from Yahotyn or 30 kilometres east of Pereiaslav, lies the picturesque village of Dobranychivka, on whose territory stands the only museumified site of the Late Palaeolithic era in the world.

The exhibition of the Dobranichivka Site Archaeological Museum, part of the Yahotyn Historical Museum, numbers more than 250 ancient exhibits. Here you can see the household complexes of the settlement of that time, bones of ancient animals, including mammoths, places where tools were made and the tools themselves. Judging by the arrangement of the finds and the ancient dwellings, a circle emerges along which they were placed, with a certain area at its centre. This indicates that it was on this very spot that a primitive settlement of a group of people stood: a dwelling with a place for constantly maintaining a hearth, an economic centre and storage pits. The display cases are filled with articles made of stone, bone and amber. The paintings of the Yahotyn artist Mykola Malynka complete the museum department’s exhibition with a panoramic effect.

This unique museum was opened in 1977 by a group of archaeologists of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR led by the archaeologist, museologist and bibliographer Ivan Havrylovych Shovkoplias, who conducted excavations at the settlement from 1953 to 1970. Later, archaeological materials from the dwelling site of primitive people in Dobranychivka were exhibited at a conference in Japan. Since then the whole world has learned of the unique archaeological find of the Late Palaeolithic in the Yahotyn region.

So we invite everyone to the Dobranichivka Site Archaeological Museum, part of the Yahotyn Historical Museum, to touch the unique treasures of the Stone Age.
