In 1706, construction of a grand three-altar church, the St. Nicholas Church, began in Bila Tserkva with funding from Hetman Ivan Mazepa. The planned height of the structure was 50 meters, with dimensions of 27 by 19 meters. However, only the southern part, known as the St. Nicholas Chapel, was completed.
The church housed relics, including a fragment of the True Cross, old prints in ornate bindings, and artistic masterpieces: a three-tiered carved iconostasis in the Byzantine style and paintings from the Cossack era.
