In 1843 the poet visited Berezan and saw Russian soldiers digging up a burial mound. Shocked by what he saw, Shevchenko wrote a daring poem directed against Russian tsarism, which he called “The Plundered Grave”. The remains of the mound are in a tree belt next to the railway, and there is a memorial sign.
