The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour (Husyntsi Church, the Flooded Church, Saviour on the Water) is an architectural landmark of the 19th century that survived the village of Husyntsi in the Kyiv region, flooded by the waters of the Kaniv Reservoir. Today the church and bell tower stand on a small island 200 metres from the shore.
The church and bell tower were built in 1822 at the expense of the local landowner Husynskyi.
On a tiny island surrounded by the flawless blue of the Dnipro, the golden domes of the Church of the Transfiguration shine. The church rising above the water is a fantastic sight! It can be seen by visiting the small town of Rzhyshchiv in the Kyiv region, which lies on the shore of the Kaniv Reservoir.
It is hard to believe, but once, on the very spot where the reservoir now spreads, there was the picturesque Ukrainian village of Husyntsi. One of its main adornments was an old church, built as early as the beginning of the 19th century. But in the 1970s, during the construction of the Kaniv Reservoir, the waters swallowed the small village. Now you will not find it on any map – it has ceased to exist. Only a few hills remained above the water, forming small islands. The church stands on one of these hills.
