About

The Church of St George is an example of Cossack sacred architecture of the early 20th century. The church was built in 1910–1914 with funds from local residents. The main building material was oak, which was typical of churches in central Ukraine. The church’s architecture stands out for its harmonious proportions and pear-shaped domes, characteristic of the Ukrainian Baroque style. Beautiful paintings and a carved iconostasis have survived in its interior. The pride and adornment of the church is the altar of oblation, which was once a fragment of the shrine of St Barbara (formerly kept in St Andrew’s Church in Kyiv, later in St Volodymyr’s Cathedral).
Over its history the church has lived through difficult times. In the Soviet period the building was used for other purposes – for a time it served as a grain store, like many other places of worship of the time. Despite this, local residents preserved the shrine, and with the revival of religious life in Ukraine the church again began to carry out its spiritual mission. Today the Church of St George is an active Orthodox church and the centre of the village’s spiritual life.
