The Yurii Domotenko Obukhiv Museum of Local Lore was founded in 1984. It is located in the centre of the city of Obukhiv.
The exhibition area of the museum premises is 570 square metres; the thematic exhibitions are housed in 11 halls representing different eras from the Stone Age to the Iron Age.
The first hall of the museum, “Overview”, introduces visitors to the economy of the Obukhiv region. It presents exhibitions, photo and documentary materials, and numerous local history publications created by museum staff and local historians.
The “Archaeology” hall is presented by the monumental sculptural composition “Maiden of Trypillia” (sculptor M.H. Horlovyi). Here are kept collections of bone remains, stone, ceramic and metal fragments and casts belonging to the Trypillia, Zarubyntsi and Chernyakhiv archaeological cultures, and archaeological materials from the Old Rus period. Chronologically, these collections begin with monuments of the Mesolithic period (mammoth bone remains of the 9th millennium BC). The diorama “Settlement of the Chernyakhiv Era” (authors Yu.K. Domotenko, K.V. Danyleiko) is on display.
In the “Cossack Era” hall, attention is drawn to the carved Cossack iconostasis by the master carver V.O. Saichuk and a collection of 18th-century ceramics.
In the “19th-20th Centuries” hall, attention is drawn to the diorama “Obukhiv Fair of the Late 19th – Early 20th Century”, a colourful depiction of the Obukhiv fair, which took place six times a year in the centre of Obukhiv. (Authors Yu.K. Domotenko, K.V. Danyleiko).
Substantial exhibitions have been created in the halls “Ukrainian Revolution of 1919-1921” and “The 1930s”. Of interest here are the diorama “Trypillia: 1919” and the “Altar of Sorrow” in memory of the victims of dekulakisation and the Holodomor.
On 19 February 2016 the museum opened the “Dignity” hall with the exhibition “Maidan 2014” and an exhibition of the Heroes of the Obukhiv region who gave their lives for the independence, unity and freedom of Ukraine.
By the criterion of rarity of the exhibition materials, the “Malyshko Room” should be singled out. Items, materials and a library for the exhibition were donated to the museum by Liubov Zabashta, wife of A.S. Malyshko.
The “Ethnography” hall. It presents examples of decorative and applied art and folk crafts of the Obukhiv region.
The museum’s collections keep the home archives of fellow-countrymen writers H.M. Kosynka, A.S. Malyshko, V.V. Chukhlib, S.P. Hrytsenko and P.L. Shvets. The collections of painting and sculpture include canvases by the masters of the brush M. Derehus, H. Kyianchenko, D. Bidnoshyi, P. Mishchenko and P. Kolomyiko, and sculptural works by H. Kalchenko, I. Honchar, M. Horlovyi and O. Furman.
