On Irpin’s Central House of Culture, which Russian soldiers mutilated in February 2022, sunflowers “bloomed” and a family of storks settled. This wall painting as part of the Flowers For Hope project on the facade of the destroyed building was created by the Los Angeles artist Trek Thunder Kelly together with the Ukrainian colleague Olena Yanko.
“The full-scale invasion of the Russian occupiers and the tragedy in Irpin are already recognised as genocide in various countries at state level. The documented atrocities of the occupiers and the desperate courage of Ukrainians became the impetus for artistic reflection by a group of artists led by the Los Angeles artist Trek Thunder Kelly. The idea of the “Flowers for Hope” project is to commemorate places where tragic events took place by means of murals whose main element is sunflowers”, says Olena
The artists also painted cars burned by the Russians, brought to Irpin mostly from the Romanivka Bridge. Among people this place came to be called the cemetery of cars. And now there are always sunflowers on it.
Date of creation/opening: 2022
