Pillbox No. 182 is located on the southern edge of Chabany, at the edge of a field next to a road and a tree belt. It was built between the first and second lines of defence of the Kyiv Fortified Area and belonged to the 7th battalion defence area. Its task, together with pillboxes No. 157 and 158, was to prevent the enemy from emerging from the forest and wooded gullies south of Chabany onto the plain around the settlement.
Pillbox No. 182 is a machine-gun caponier for flanking fire. It has resistance class “M2” (that is, designed to withstand a hit by a 152-mm shell). It is a single-storey reinforced concrete structure with one casemate and two embrasures for machine guns. From them it was possible to fire towards the east and west. The firing sector of the embrasures reached 65 degrees, the largest among caponiers of this type in the KyUR.
The pillbox has two orillons, long concrete projections that protect the embrasures from fire from those directions that the embrasures themselves cannot cover. The orillons also hold the earth embankment that covers the pillbox on the frontal side, in this case the southern one. The walls and ceiling of the pillbox, except the rear wall, are lined on the inside with anti-spalling coating to protect the garrison from being hit by concrete fragments. The rear wall is fitted only with a built-in metal mesh. The embrasure assemblies (devices for closing the embrasures) are of the P-30 type, that is, the 1930 model. To the right of each embrasure there is a niche in the wall, into which the box with the machine-gun belt went when firing into the left part of the firing sector. On the roof of the pillbox the periscope tube and the antenna lead-out tube have been preserved. Above the entrance vestibule there is a square opening in the roof. Such openings served for drilling water-intake boreholes and installing their equipment, because a lot of water was needed to cool the machine guns.
On the roof of Pillbox No. 182 there is a unique detail: a machine-gun platform with a parapet for close defence. It is the only one among about 3000 pillboxes built in the USSR in the 1930s that has such a feature. The platform is adapted for a machine gun on a wheeled mount that could fire to the south, towards the forest. This direction is inaccessible to the pillbox’s embrasures, and neighbouring firing points also could not cover this pillbox from an enemy in the south. In the wall of the pillbox under the platform there is a niche where the planking on which the machine gunner stood could be stored.
