Red forest

The Red or Rusty Forest is a section of pine forest in the immediate vicinity of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The trees took a powerful blow of radiation, which “painted” the needles a brick colour. They say that during a fire the forest could have served as a source of secondary radioactive contamination, so it was decided to bury part of the most contaminated wood. Later the ecosystem began to recover, and young pines began to grow on this spot.
