About the place

The Chornobyl nuclear power plant operated from 1977 to 2000. On 26.04.1986, there was an accident at the 4th reactor, which caused the destruction of the reactor and contamination of the surrounding areas with radioactive particles. At the time of the accident, the ChNPP was the third-largest nuclear power plant in the world (after Japan and France).

After the accident, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reactors were restarted, and the Shelter (so-called Sarcophagus) was built over the ruins of the 4th reactor. In 2016 it was covered with new construction - a New Safe Confinement, which was unofficially named "the Arch".

Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of thousands of liquidators and further decontamination work, today the level of radiation at the observation point at a distance of about 270 m from the Arch, is 2-3 times lower than on board the plane. Hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world visit the Chornobyl nuclear power plant every year to see one of the most outstanding sites of the XX century, which changed the course of the world’s history.

Today, the Chornobyl nuclear power plant is a unique site of global importance, a memorial to humanity's victory over an invisible enemy - radiation - and a place of honor for the liquidators, whose achievement stopped it and saved the world.

You can see the Chornobyl nuclear power plant both from the outside and get on a tour inside. Go around each of the NPP units, see the fire brigade from which the first firefighters arrived, the unfinished third line of the NPP, cooling towers, "iron forest" and feed the fish in the cooling channel near the station. A tour inside the Chornobyl nuclear power plant gives an opportunity to learn how the nuclear power plant is arranged, stand on the upper shield of the 3rd reactor, visit the control room, talk to specialists and even see unit 4 Control room.
