About

The Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant is the first (uppermost) step of the Dnipro cascade of hydroelectric power plants. The plant is part of the “Kyiv HPP and PSPP Cascade” branch. It was built in record time: 1960–1968. At the Kyiv HPP, low-head horizontal bulb hydro units were used for the first time in the former USSR. The uniqueness of the Kyiv hydroelectric complex lies in the fact that here, for the first time in domestic hydro-engineering practice, the HPP building was combined with a concrete spillway dam with 20 spillways. Today the HPP building, 51 m wide and 285 m long, of the combined type, is structurally divided by expansion joints into five blocks of 4 horizontal bulb units each. At the beginning of 2021 the installed capacity of the Kyiv HPP was 440 MW.

The building of the Kyiv PSPP is connected to the upper reservoir by 6 pressure reinforced-concrete and steel pipelines with a diameter of 3.8 m.

The upper reservoir is created at a height of 70 m above the level of the Kyiv Reservoir with a useful volume of 3.7 million cubic metres, into which water is pumped during the night drop in energy consumption in the power system.

The upper reservoir of the PSPP is drawn down in the evening hours, during the peak of energy consumption in the power system.

You can visit the Kyiv HPP by prior arrangement with the management regarding the date, time and programme of the visit. All tours for organised groups of schoolchildren and students are free of charge!
