About the place

One of the earliest Vyshgorod burial grounds was discovered in 1985 on the site of the future cinema "Mir" (5 Kyivska St.).
In the course of the construction work, bumpy human bones and whitish ash, as well as a bronze so-called turtle-shaped fibula (cuff on top), a bilon jewelery pendant and a silver temporal ring with a large bead of rock crystal were found accidentally.
Undoubtedly, the burial was carried out under the barrow mound. The mound, apparently, was isolated. It was located 1.5 km southwest of Vyshgorod’s settlement and dominated the surrounding countryside. Probably one of the paths leading to the city was passing by the mound.
Given the presence of quenched human bones and traces of fire on objects, the burial was carried out after the ceremony of cremation. Unfortunately, if this extremely interesting complex was systematically studied by archaeologists, information about it could be obtained much more.
The pendant has direct analogies among the antiquities of the Vikings. From the "tortoise" fibula, only its half with traces of staying in the fire remained.
These fasteners were one of the most striking elements of the Scandinavian women's costume of the Viking Age. Fibula dates back to the first half - the middle of the 10th century.
Similar burials with "turtle-shaped" fibulas, excavated in Kiev, M. K. Karger identified as a separate group of "graves of noble women". This is not the only burial place with Scandinavian ornaments found in Vyshgorod. A significant number of Normans-Scandinavians in the 10th century was part of the elite of the Old Russian society. There was no exception to the ancient Vyshgorod, which clearly illustrates the materials of funeral monuments.
